Stonham Brothers’ Legacy Continues to Benefit Tatworth Primary School
Tatworth Primary School is continuing to feel the lasting impact of the generosity and community spirit shown by the Stonham twin brothers, whose legacy fund has provided valuable support to several key village facilities.
The brothers, who lived in Tatworth, were well known locally for their hard work and dedication to village life. From 1975 through to the 1990s, they owned and ran Herbert’s General Store, a much‑loved village shop that served generations of local residents.
Following their passing, the brothers chose to leave money to a number of local establishments that had been central to the community throughout their lives. Beneficiaries of the legacy fund include Tatworth Primary School, the Memorial Hall, and the Village Playing Field — all of which continue to play an important role in bringing people together.
At Tatworth Primary School, the legacy has made a significant difference. Funding from the Stonham brothers’ gift helped to bring a new outdoor play trail to life, providing children with enhanced opportunities for both learning and play in an outdoor environment.
After many years of planning and additional fundraising for the play trail, installation took place in July 2025.
The children played a key role in selecting the equipment, with the School Council helping to make the final decision. This included choosing the all‑year‑round wetpour flooring, which means the play trail can be used even during the colder months. The children selected the ocean‑coloured design, which is loved by all! There are 7 fabulous pieces of equipment including the largest Clamber Stack climbing frame available plus a large net swing!
Those who remember the Stonham brothers speak of them as hardworking men with a strong commitment to Tatworth. Their decision to support the village through their legacy is seen as a fitting reflection of a lifetime spent serving the local community. Our school play trail is much loved by all of the children and provides enhanced learning and play opportunities for everyone. The generosity of Charles & Jack Stonham provides a lasting reminder of how one family’s contribution can continue to strengthen village life for generations to come.
