As part of the Prevent Strategy at Tatworth Primary School we promote the British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. Our activities include:
School Council:
Two members of each class, are elected by their peers to represent their class as School Councillors. Selecting the councillors allows us to explore democracy in action and ensures pupils voices are heard on all aspects of school life.
Classes hold a Class Council meeting (within their classroom) then the School Councillor feeds this back to the School Council team. Each School Councillor will lead the Class Council session and record their classes’ ideas and answers to the questions posed. During 2020/21 the School Council proposals included ongoing work on the Wellbeing Oakey Dokey garden and the running track.
Eco-Warriors:
Each class also have two elected Eco-Warriors.
The Eco-Warriors have worked to reduce the amount of waste and plastics brought into school and focused on the development of a bee and butterfly garden to support these species to continue to flourish in our locality.
Arts Ambassadors:
Members of our school community who are interested in the arts can apply to become an Arts Ambassador. This group of children meet to promote arts across the school and go on their own art visits too! During 2022/23 they plan to support other children to enjoy the arts and continue to investigate other arts activities the school can be involved in. Next year’s project includes a large, whole-school arts project for outside.
Sports Ambassadors:
There are two sports ambassadors in KS2. These children support our PE teachers and coaches to promote physical exercise and being active. They meet with children and staff to ensure our pupils’ voice is heard.
Children are also able to nominate themselves to be Librarians.
As part of children’s SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) development, we promote the British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.
Children will gain an understanding of these values through ongoing whole-school systems and specific lessons. For example, through: PSHE and other subject lessons, assemblies, our behaviour for learning focus, external visits and visitors, pupil voice, links within the local community, supporting and learning about local and national charities, and specifically:
Democracy:
Children learn about systems of democracy within the UK during their PSHE lessons. Children also experience democracy in action during elections for children’s roles, for example our school council.
The Rule of Law:
Each class discuss and agree rules and learn about our school rules. During PSHE lessons, children learn about rules and laws, and why they are necessary and important to keep everyone safe.
Individual Liberty:
Children learn to appreciate their uniqueness and to understand their right to make choices during PSHE lessons and see this positively reinforced through our behaviour for learning focuses.
Mutual Respect:
Children learn about the ways that people can be different and learn to celebrate and respect diversity in PSHE lessons. Through our emphasis on class discussion and group work, children experience hearing opinions that are different to their own and responding respectfully.
Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs:
Children learn about people’s beliefs and cultures, and how to show tolerance and respect in PSHE lessons. Through their learning in RE lessons, hearing stories from other faiths/cultures and listening to visitors, children gain an appreciation of a range of beliefs within our community and across the world.
