SEND

Love of Learning and Working Together’ permeates everything that we do. We encourage all children strive to ‘Achieve and Shine’ and reach their full potential in a supportive and nurturing environment.

At different times during their school career, a child or young person may have a special educational need. The SEND Code of Practice (September 2015) defines SEND as:
“A child or young person has SEND if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for them. A child of compulsory school age or a young person has a learning difficulty or disability if they:
• have a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age or
• have a disability which prevents or hinders them from making use of educational facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools or mainstream post-16 institutions.”

Quality first teaching underpins all educational provision. It focuses on inclusive practice and breaks down barriers to learning. For the majority of children this can be achieved by understanding the needs of individuals, identifying specific barriers and making adaptations to the environment or teaching that will enable all children to access their learning and thrive. A range of strategies may be used, such as those identified in the Somerset Graduated Response Tool. The Somerset Graduated Response Tool breaks down SEN into four broad areas of need. This targets specific support for teachers to plan and for any interventions to take place.
